Platform 78 was honoured to support Tom Postma Design with their design of latest high-end showroom for Cindy Chao The Art Jewel, The Shanghai Maison.

Situated in one of the most luxurious and exclusive areas of the city, The Shanghai Maison is housed within an original early 20th Century heritage building. The Showroom serves as a private and exclusive space for clients to visit by appointment as well as a space that hosts occasional events.

The design takes visitors on a journey that begins with the entry – a transformative space that brings them away from the city and into the interior world of Cindy Chao. The Lounge is designed to spark a sense of curiosity and anticipation in guests, whilst simultaneously providing a luxurious space in which visitors can relax, while their gaze can be caught by any one of the highly curated objects and art pieces in the space. Situated at either end of the lounge, the VIP sales rooms are the final destination in the visitor’s journey through The Shanghai Maison. A set of theatrical double doors, slide open to reveal these spaces – the most intimate and anticipated of the whole space. Adjacent to the lounge, Cindy Chao’s own library, designed to house her personal collection of antique French books and rare artefacts can be discovered. A subtle drop in ceiling height and shift in materiality creates an intimate secondary space to the main lounge.

The Showroom is located on the 2nd floor of the building, together with company offices and a back of house space.

Our involvement with the Showroom was to support Tom Postma Design during the design stage. Specifically, we were invited to:

Develop MEP concept based on TPD design and the available base building technical services.
Review and respond to local team MEP design in relation to the initial concept, and TPD’s architecture and interior design intent.
