In 2019, Arup were commissioned by the then office of first deputy prime minister to complete a desktop study baselining the risks of Sea Level Rise in Bahrain.

In 2021, based on the findings of Arup’s first report and following recommendations of the defence council Arup undertook the second phase of the study to develop a resilience plan to Sea Level Rise in Bahrain.

The study included research and planning of the following topics:

  • Further develop a detailed mapping of the affected areas from coastal flooding.
  • Propose recommendations and an Action Plan to the Ministries and relevant parties.
  • Study and prepare policy, laws, and directives pertaining to reclamation projects. Propose strategies for protecting affected roads.
  • Identify vital infrastructure area and propose defence measures.
